Icon: Faye Dunaway

It takes a special woman to steal the screen from fellow icon Steve McQueen. But Faye Dunaway did it with ease in The Thomas Crown Affair. Whether stealing the screen from McQueen, or stealing money in Bonnie and Clyde, Faye Dunaway always looked amazing.

Similar to Frank Sinatra who made dressing a manly thing, Faye Dunaway always inspired. She always seemed to influence the viewer adding style and sexiness to everyone's wardrobe. Always stunning, her styles are still relevant today.

When the snow and cold are keeping you down, remember the best remedy is often a great Brunello Cucinelli cashmere sweater wrapped around you while cuddling up in front of a fire.

Shining Shoes

Joe Covell's freshly cleaned and shined leather Wingtips

Shining shoes is important. It should be performed at least once a month if not the preferable once a week. This is especially crucial for shoes that get daily use.

Shining shoes not only makes your shoes look better, it conditions and protects the leather from the harsh winter weather.

Shining your shoes is easy and does not take much more than 15 or 20 minutes. Most men find it meditative or relaxing to shine their shoes while watching a game on TV. Remember that shoes are an investment, and a good pair can easily last a lifetime if you take care of them. The following video shows perfectly the necessary tools and process of shining your shoes. There is also a section of "glazing" for any of you old military men.

Photos from Italy, Part 1

Currently, Andrew is on his holiday and enjoying his time traveling across Italy. Since he admits that his passion is work and fashion, he wanted to set out and see inspiration across Italy - the people, the buildings, the clothes, and all of the cool stores. Here are a few of his first pictures we are receiving back at the store. Enjoy!

Perhaps more applicable in Europe, but next time you find yourself without your pocket square, use your cigarettes

The Stylish Clientele

Middle of winter, snow on the ground, our stylish client David does not let anything prevent him from wearing his new purple drivers. More common in the summer, it is fun to see someone wear what they love, and do it so well, any time of the year.

As always - have fun!

Coco Chanel

Similar to our idea that style influences every facet of the well-dressed person's life, Coco Chanel once said:

"Fashion is not something that exists in dresses only. Fashion is in the sky, in the street, fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening."

The history of the Button Down shirt

"Button Down" Shirts, Culturata - made with Organic Cotton in Rome, Italy

The button down shirt has quite an interesting history. Also known as the sport shirt, the name "button down" refers to the collar. Shirts button up, but collars button down.

Originally called polo shirts, the name derived from late 19th century English polo players as they wore long sleeve oxford cloth shirts while playing. To prevent their collars from flapping while galloping on the field, players would use buttons to affix their collars to their shirts. Noticing this, John Brooks (of Brooks Brothers fame) adopted this in 1896 and began selling these shirts in his family stores. This is why Brooks Brothers labels still say "The Original Polo Shirt".

The legacy only grows from there - It is a well known fact that Gianni Agnelli (often considered the best dressed man of all time) was a massive fan of Brooks Brothers button down shirts and would buy them in bulk during his business trips to America. This started a major craze in Italy causing many people to not only wear button down shirts, but wear them like Gianni Agnelli with their collars unbuttoned showcasing their own Sprezzatura. The trend has been continued by well dressed Italians everywhere including Agnelli's protege Luca Di Montezemolo. (Seen Below)

Luca Di Montezemolo and Agnelli's Sprezzatura

This story is reaffirmed by current Brooks Brothers owner Claudio Del Vecchio. Mr. Del Vecchio, an Italian and self admitted Agnelli fan says that Agnelli is the reason that spread and button down collars are the only two collars consistently seen around Italy.

We must thank Gianni Agnelli, as the Italians have perfected the art of the button down and still make some of the best in the world - Luciano Barbera, Sartoria Partenopea, Luigi Borrelli, Zegna, Culturata - all available here at Lawrence Covell.

Such an interesting history: an American icon influenced by the English, perfected by the Italians, the history of the Button Down shirt.

How to care for your necktie.

Ties by Massimo Bizzocchi, Borrelli, and Kiton

Gentlemen, we all know that ties can be expensive investments, so we thought we would share a few tips to help keep your ties in perfect shape.

1) Untie your tie. This is the most important - always untie your tie the way you tied it. This means, do not pull your tie over your head and simply yank the narrow end back through the knot. Silk is very delicate, and pulling the tie like that will really strain the silk and forever damage your expensive tie. Give it a few extra seconds of thought and untie your tie in a proper manner.

2) Store your tie. When you get home, do not leave the tie over your favorite chair or on the floor for your dog to play with, hang it like a gentleman. We recommend a tie hanger, some sort of hanger designed for ties. However, if you do not have the space, you can always roll you ties and store them in a drawer or dresser to avoid exposure to sun and to avoid any mishaps.

3) Tuck your tie. Soup, olive oil, food in general are all killers for the tie. Although the sauces and savories do not necessarily damage the tie themselves (they can stain), the real damage often comes from poor dry cleaning. If you need to go to a cleaner, ask us and we can recommend one in the area. But the best option is to prevent spilling in the first place - we have a few ideas to help: you can tuck your tie into your shirt the way often seen on Wall St. and in prep school cafeterias. You could wear a vest, or, do as the Italians do and take off the tie and tuck it into your jacket pocket.

4) Rotate your ties. Similar to shoes and suits, you should never wear the same tie for two days in a row. Ties are made of natural fabrics, and need time to rest and breathe. If for some reason you do not have enough ties to rotate, be sure to stop by the store and we will be happy to load you up with some new pieces!

Icon: Frank Sinatra

Frank Sinatra - our next icon. Not much really needs to be said about "Ol' Blue Eyes", as the leader of the Rat Pack and some would say one of the best crooners of all time, Frank was a man's man.

Frank looking dapper in his youth

Frank Sinatra was an icon because he made it manly to be dressed. Often a time, a client will say that he does not need a suit, that may be true and a sign of the times, but Frank made it a man thing to be in a suit. He looked comfortable, ready to do anything, and always looked immaculate.

Even in a suit and tie, Frank was down to have fun, sing a song, or pour a round of drinks. Frank Sintra - a man's man and a man who always made a suit look cool.

Always the star performer - always impeccable!
